The name Destiny's Child can mean different things to different people, but in the context of the American R&B girl-group, the term is a reference to the Book of Isaiah in the Hebrew Bible.

Where did Destiny's Child get their name?
The girl-group Destiny's Child originated in Houston, Texas, and were originally formed under the name 'Girls' Tyme'.

The group then went through a series of name changes and were known as all of the following at some point in their history:

  • Something Fresh
  • Cliché
  • The Dolls
  • Destiny
In the end, the group decided to settle on the name Destiny's Child when they signed to Elektra Records in 1996, although it's not clear who was ultimately responsible for the name choice.

There are suggestions that lead singer Beyonce Knowles had some influence on the name choice, whilst other sources cite her father Mark Knowles (the band's original manager) as the main decision-maker in the group.

It may also be possible that record label executives had some input into the band's choice of name too.
