Emmy is the name of awards in the United States of America. They are production awards but concentrate more on entertainment. It started in 1949. It was held at Hollywood Athletic Club. It is a feminization of the term Immy. Shirley Dinsdale received the first Emmy. The Emmy trophies are made by a private company in El Dorado, Kansas. Their statuette is a winged woman holding an atom. This has become very famous and was designed by a television engineer Louis McManus. He drew inspiration from his wife.
Three related yet separate organizations present the Emmys. They are known as the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences that honors national prime time entertainment; the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences which recognizes daytime, sports, news and documentary programming; and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences honors programming originating outside the United States.
