R&B, which stands for 'Rhythm and Blues' originated in the 1940s among urban African Americans.

Its roots are considered a fusion of blues, jazz, and rock'n'roll.

Nowadays, the musical genre that we know as R&B is far removed from the sounds of its original roots.

Where did R&B come from? The term R&B was actually first coined in 1948 by a man named Jerry Wexler.

It was a loose term used to describe the sounds that were coming out of the African American community during the '40s (before that, the genre was controversially referred to as 'race music').

The original sound of R&B had a wide range of stylistic influences, and the heritage of the African, Caribbean, and Cuban immigrants who had settled in the United States was central to the music's vibe and rhythms.

Between 1940 and 1960, the genre went through a number of different changes and developments. The sound of R&B fused with the mainstream, taking on board various influences - which led to a sound that may be more familiar to the Ushers and Beyonces of today's contemporary R&B scene.

R&B stands for Rhythm and Blues. It is a combination of Jazz, gospel and blues.
It has its origin in the African American generation and from the mixed cultural society of the 1940s in the United states.

African American singers were the main performers of this kind of music.
