The song you're thinking of is A Change Is Gonna Come by American soul and R&B singer Sam Cooke. It was first recorded in 1963, and was released shortly after Cooke's death in 1964.

The song was written during after Cooke heard Bob Dylan's Blowin' In The Wind and was touched by the fact that a white man could write such a powerful song about racism. A Change Is Gonna Come is now widely associated with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

In 2008, British soul and R&B artist Seal released a cover of A Change Is Gonna Come, although this did not prove as popular as Cooke's original song.

Lyrics to A Change Is Gonna Come

I was born by the river in a little tent
And just like that river I've been running ever since
It's been a long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come, oh yes it will

It's been too hard living, but I'm afraid to die
Cos I don't know what's out there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come, oh yes it will

I go to the movie
And i go down town
somebody keep telling me don't hang around
its been along time coming
But I know a change is gonna come, oh yes it will

then I go to see my brother
And I say help me please
And he winds up knockin' me
Back down on my knees

There were times when I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gone come, oh yes it will
