I went to an Eric Clapton Concert at the Royal Albert Hall many years ago. (Clapton did concerts there every spring and I went to most). Mark Knopfler, when Dire Straits were at their peak, turned out as a session guitarist for Clapton. (Ok, they did "Money for Nothing" as part of the set.) But for both artists,it was more important to deliver a performance than get off on a musical ego trip. Sadly, with a very few exceptions, that would be unlikely to happen now.
