That is absolutely the best (non-Pratchett) book I have read in the last 5 years. And you will find your sympathy with an out-of-control drunk grows. (There's also a terrific twist (of several) in there - but I won't spoil it for you.)

The biography of Linus Pauling.

A Mary Roach book that I forget the title of and I am not going out to my bookshelf to look either.

The autobiography of Mark Twain.

That whole group of physicists around the time of Pauling were something else. There ought to be a book about them all.

Yes, Linus Pauling brought quantum mechanics to chemistry. I am at that part of the book where Pauling is just about to describe the structure of a specific protein.

Did you know that Robert Oppenheimer made an indecent proposal to Pauling's wife? He suggested they run off to Mexico for a romantic trip. Oppenheimer also offered Pauling a place on the atom bomb project. Pauling declined.

I'm reading two at the moment. Richard Dawkins's "The God Delusion" (it was a surprise gift from my son) and David Baldacci's "The Collectors" (the second of his Camel Club series).
