According to a Greek myth Pan invented the first musical instrument-the Shepherd's pipe. The myth says that one day Pan sighed through the reeds on a river bank and had heard his breath produce a sorrowful howl as it was passed through them. Then he broke them off in unequal lengths and bound them together. He had the first musical instrument ever. The primitive music had a meaning as part of the people.

The legend of Pan and the reeds can't be believed but it may give the suggestion how man first had the idea for making various musical instruments. In the legend, Pan may imitate the sounds of nature, or have used articles of nature all about him to create his music. According to the history the first instruments were of a drum type. Later man invented wind instruments by using the horns of animals. Modern brass instruments came with the developments of these crude instruments. Soon man discovered the use of strings and invented the simple lyre and harp from which developed the instruments played with a bow. In the middle ages, the Crusaders brought back many inquisitive oriental instruments. These joined the folk instruments that already existed in Europe, urbanized into many of the instruments now in use.

The first musical instrument ever invented, was the human voice. When man tried to communicate , he used his voice , the next was the drum , followed by a string instrument.

The answer to this question differs from one person to the other. If you believe the Greek myth of Pan then fine, that's your belief. I personally would believe in the scientific way. That way is that our early ancestors had invented the first instrument. Yet of course not the early, early ancestors, but maybe the Homo Habilus, or the Homo Erectus. But not one of our modern day man.

Ok. I've got two different answers...
1. It is possible that the first musical instrument ever invented was the human voice itself, which can make a vast array of sounds, from singing, humming and whistling through to clicking, coughing and yawning.

2. The first musical instrument ever invented, was the human voice. When man tried to communicate , he used his voice , the next was the drum , followed by a string instrument.
