Mad World was originally recorded by Tears for Fears as it was written by band member Roland Orzabal and sung by bassist Curt Smith. It was the band's third single and reached number 3 in the UK charts in November 1982.
In 2001 a much slower and sombre version was released by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules. The song was the soundtrack to the movie 'Donnie Darko' (released 2001) and became an international hit also reaching number one in the UK charts in December 2003.
