You are not wrong the disk is not for the mp4 for me it shows pictures

First install the mp4 software on your computer and then connect it to the computer. If the software will be properly installed then you would be able to download the music. Then there will be no such error like 'doesn't recognize the device'.

Please know if your mp4 restricts certain types of files. Most mp4 can run mp3 and mp4 files easily. Check if you are copying file of some other format into mp4. New Apple MP4 now can play wav,wmv, avi, mp3 and other format files.

Secondly change the way you copy files. Right click on the file and copy it. Open the mp4 player folder on your computer and paste the file.

Thirdly right click on the file, go to properties and check if the file is read only. Make it archive and save it.
