Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States from the years 1829 - 1837. Although a great deal of his policies were popular at the time, Jackson has been remembered in history as a pioneer of Native American removal and support of slavery. In regards to Native American removal he comes under the most criticism, Jackson sought to buy lands east of the Mississippi from Indian tribes and forced them to move further west. When a group of Cherokee Indians refused to sign a removal treaty from their lands, Jackson sent 7,000 armed troops to forcibly remove the Cherokee. The forced removal that resulted became known as the "Trail of Tears" and resulted in the deaths of 4,000 Cherokee Indians.

He was particularly cruel towards the Indians (Native Americans). He signed the controversial Indian Removal Act in 1830, which authorized which forced a lot of Indians off their native land. This cumulated in the 'Trail of Tears', where 4,000 Cherokee died.
