Justin Bieber’s hit single can be played along with on the recorder if you listen closely to the rhythm. All notes are natural, with no sharps or flats. For the following notes no rhythm will be given but each note indicates a syllable of the listed lyrics. If you also know which notes are in which position on the instrument, then the chorus is as follows: F-F-E-D-C-E-D (with the first five notes being the same length, the sixth being shorter and the seventh extended) played twice for the lyrics ‘I will never say never/ I will fight till forever’; the ‘I will fight’ which sometimes links the second and third chorus lines has notes C-E-E-D; for the lyrics of the aforementioned third line ‘Whenever you knock me down/ I will not stay on the ground’ the notes are the same for both parts of the line, and they are A-A-E-G-F-E-D; for ‘Pick it up, pick it up’ the notes are a simple E-D-E repeated three times then play E-D-E-E-E for the ‘up up up’; A-D-C-B-B-A are the notes for the final chorus line which repeats the title of the song. For the verse, the notes are as follows: E-E-D-E-D-E-C-C-D-E-D for ‘I never thought that I could walk through fire’ or ‘I never thought that I could take it higher’ D-D-C-D-C-D-C-B-B-B-A for ‘I never thought that I could take the burn’ and ‘Until I reached the point of no return’. These patterns appear in a ‘Through fire, take the burn, take it higher, no return’ rhyme, as heard in the recording, and again in the second verse with slight variations; however, the notes given here work for verse two as well. The bridge in between chorus and verse is as follows: ‘And there’s just no turning back/ when your heart’s under attack’ is entirely on the note C except for ‘back’ and the ‘-tack’ of attack, which are both D, ‘Gonna give everything I have’ is C-C-B-B-B-B-C-B and ‘it’s my destiny’ the first time round is A-C-D-E-E-D, which Justin elaborates on just before the second chorus with the words ‘Cos this is my destiny’ and the notes E-G-G-E-G-A-A.
