Lupang Hinirang is the national anthem of the Philippines. The music was composed by Juian Felipe in 1898 and the lyrics were adapted from a poem called Filipinas written in 1899 by Jose Palma. It was originally written as incidental music and did not have words when it was adopted as the national anthem and then played during the proclamation of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898. The song was banned during the American occupation with the passing of the Flag Law which was repealed in 1919 when the song was translated into English. It was eventually legalised as the Philippine Hymn.
