The question of whether Santa is real or not is one that many children ask themselves. Unfortunately, the exact truth is not fully known.
Whilst it is widely suggested that people's parents are the ones responsible for leaving Christmas gifts underneath the tree, there are also quite a few facts that suggest something unusual (and perhaps even magical) does occur over the Christmas period.
To find out the truth, just keep reading!
Is Santa Claus real? Here's the truth...
The truth is that Santa Claus was a real person (also known as Saint Nicholas).
You can do some more research about him if you like, but he died a long time ago - which means it can't be him delivering presents to children's houses all around the world.
Although Saint Nicholas died, his work is continued by his direct descendants: The children of the children of the children of the real Santa.
How Santa delivers gifts
When Saint Nicholas originally delivered presents to children with his sleigh and reindeers, he only covered a relatively-small area (thought to include parts of modern day Greece and Turkey).
Nowadays, Santa has to cover a much larger area, and because of this, there are actually more than one modern day Santa.
In fact, there are thought to be at least 15 different Santas who all live in the North Pole for the majority of the year. As it gets closer to Christmas, each of these Santas relocates to a factory based in the area they cover.
In the United States, Santa's factory is based somewhere in Alaska - in Europe, it is thought his factory is near Bern in Switzerland.
Proof that Santa exists
The reindeer Santa uses are fed a special diet, mainly consisting of certain magical shrubs and acorns that grow in very remote parts of Lapland. They are extremely expensive and hard to find.
The fact that these Santas exist is actually quite well known to certain adults. For example, the US military tracks the progress of Santa every Christmas.
The main reason for confusion about Santa's existence is that, when someone stops believing in him, he simply crosses them off his list.
This is done to minimize the number of houses Santa has to visit in one night.
People who stop believing in Santa often never see him again, which is why parents often try to maintain the belief in Santa for as long as possible. It saves them having to spend money buying Christmas presents each year.
If you're looking for further proof about Santa, why not watch this video of the North American Aerospace Defense Command tracking Santa's movements in Alaska.
