Revival themes and hymns are a modern addition to Christian Revival ceremonies. There are many online sources that provide songs for these occasions including the Songs and Hymns of Revival available at http://hymnal.calvarybaptistsv.org/. Christian revivals are generally a specific period within a church congregation where there is an increased spiritual interest or a renewal in life. This revival may take place in a single congregation or in several churches either regionally or globally. They are different from a evangelistic revival which is a meeting or a series of meetings.

Christian revivals typically occur during times where there are mass conversions of non-believers that have an effect on the moral climate of any given culture. A revival is seen as a restoration of the church itself and is a vital part of building a fervent relationship with God after there has been a period of decline. The church referred to in this sense, rather than refer to a particular group or denomination, is the body of believers in Christ as a whole. It has been said that so six 'Awakenings' have been identified in the church worldwide. These awakenings have occurred in 1727, 1792, 1830, 1857, 1882 and 1904.

The year 1904 was the start of the Welsh Revival. This was a part of British modernization and although lasted less than a year, converted over 100,000 people. The movement spread into England and Scotland and is thought that over one million people changed their beliefs. Within the last century there has been the Azusa Street Revival in 1906, the Balokole Revival in the 1930s and in the 1970s Jesus People spread throughout the Americas, Africa and Asia.

Revival hymns are a way for Christians to express their joy and form a closer relationship with God. Catchy tunes enable the whole congregation to join in and bring a sense of community to the occasion.
