Tinker Bell (yes, it’s actually two separate words!) is the name of the main fairy from J. M. Barrie’s 1904 play,
Peter Pan.
Tinker Bell, often referred to as just Tink, is also a character in Barrie’s 1911 novel
Peter and Wendy (an adaptation of
Peter Pan) and in several Disney movies based on Barrie’s work, including the 1953 movie
Peter Pan.
How Did Tinker Bell Get Her Name?
In the original play and novel, Tinker Bell fixed pots and kettles – much as a real tinker would do.
The “Bell” part of her name could be a reference to the way her voice is represented by jingling bells, or it could be a variation of “Belle,” which is French for “beauty.”
Over the years, Tinker Bell has become something of a children’s cultural icon and a symbol of the Disney franchise.
She even has her own animated movie,
Tinker Bell, which was released by Disney in 2008.
