For starters you do not mention what kind of tape player is, I'm assuming is a car tape player so the problem could be the mechanism or some strange body is inside the mechanism (I have this a lot with my little girl that likes to introduce what ever she finds).
Try first to check for strange parts inside and if it is something remove it, but if its not the case the mechanism should be greased and to give it the proper maintenance with the proper technical repair.(you do not mention either if your cassette player is old).
If you go with the technician to repair ask him to change the rubber band and clean the heads and rollers (depending on how much you use the tape player and how old is it ask to change the head and rubber rollers). In this way you will make sure to have a nice tape player for another 5 years.
