In The Sound of Music, Maria was accepted rather quickly to be honest, but I guess that's what happens when you only have 2 hours to tell a story LOL.
Obviously, to begin with there was some tension. The children did not want to accept her as they had known several nannies and managed to make them all leave. When they realised she was tougher than the rest, and also didn't go running to tell their father when they played tricks on her, they warmed to her.
What happened on the night of the thunderstorm made the bond between them even tighter as it was obvious even the boys were scared, but she comforted them all and had them singing a song.
The curtain fiasco was a step too far in my opinion; I would have been livid if someone had made clothes out of my drapes. However, it was almost war time and the children did need play clothes (and there were a lot of them!) Actually, making that many clothes from so few curtains is something of a miracle!
I thought Captain Von Trapp's fiancee was very laid back about letting him go. Okay, he was in love with another woman, and the fact that she was a nun probably made it more difficult to hate her, but she didn't exactly fight for her man.
I will say though, considering this film is 49 years old, it has definitely stood the test of time. It's an easy film to watch with likeable characters and songs that are well known and easy to sing along with.
Of course, I have been referring to the film but it is based on a true story which inspired a German film in 1956 before being made into the Hollywood blockbuster we all know and (most of us) love.
However, just to be fair, this is the real Maria Vonn Trapp born 26th January 1905 and died on March 28th, 1987. She apparently ended her days in Vermont, USA, so that's where they escaped over the hills to! Must have taken a lot of running lol.
