Sounds to me like someone needs a little Jane Austen with their movies! Have you tried any of the adaptations of Austen's most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice?

In the original novel, first published in 1813, our heroine Elizabeth Bennet meets the wealthy and handsome Mr Darcy, but it's hate at first sight. Elizabeth thinks Mr Darcy is sullen, condescending and holds too high an opinion of himself.

This opinion appears to be reinforced at a ball, during which Mr Darcy refuses to dance or take part in any socializing. For his part, Mr Darcy assumes Elizabeth to be of an inferior class and family and so beneath his interest; at the same ball, he remarks unpleasantly about Elizabeth without knowing anything about her. Elizabeth overhears the remark, deepening her dislike, even as she acknowledges his attractiveness.
Of course it all ends happily ever after, but not without much trial and tribulation.

Movie Versions of Pride and Prejudice

The most recent was released in 2005 and starred Keira Knightly as Elizabeth and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr Darcy (pictured above). The film is seen as quite faithful to the book and was a commercial and critical success, so why not give it a try?

If you prefer films from the 'golden age' of Hollywood, then watch the 1940 MGM Pride and Prejudice, starring Laurence Olivier and Grier Garson. This version, though well-regarded, differs more from the novel, and the setting is later than in Austen's original.

Two other films are modern-day adaptations, transposing the story and characters to contemporary times: Bride and Prejudice (2004) is a musical version set in India, while Pride and Prejudice: A Latter-Day Comedy (2003), filmed for the Mormon market, sets the film in a small city in Utah.

Here's a clip from the 1940 version. Mr Darcy proposes to Elizabeth, but all goes far from well...
