What is a dart board made of? And will it dry out with age?

No
they won’t. Modern boards are made from low maintenance, compressed sisal
fibres that doesn’t dry out. In the olden days (until the 1930’s) dart boards
had to be soaked in water to soften them up due to the hard wood that was used
in making them.

Almost right. Dartboards were soaked so that the material they were made of would expand to remove any holes made by the darts, it had nothing to do with softening the wood. Until recently, even sisal boards were given this treatment. Nowadays when a sisal board gets a bit worn, it's just replaced.
