Cut common time is associated with sacred music. You have two beats per measure, and the beat is written as a half note. The typical piece is slowly moving in half note cadence, but of course you can break it up into quarter notes, eighth notes, etc. I think you can find it in marches also, as it lends itself to a walking beat. An example might be a Souza march.
