Old fashioned plugged in radio : Why is that sometimes I can pick up a lot of stations so much so that I have trouble tuning into one of my favorites?

If it's happening at night ... It's because the signals actually travel farther at night.  So a signal you may not receive - or receive weakly - during the day, may come in strong at night.

Also at night the AM stations change their broadcast direction, so you may get others as well.

The signals travel further at night (less interference from sun) so they are required to change at night so they do not interfere with other stations on the same frequency. Years ago I could listen to LA station almost as clearly as Alberta station after night. We are talking AM.. FM does not bounce off the ionosphere thus is basically line of sight.
