I usually stay away from the harder bands as they have a very limited range of emotions that can be elicited. Most genres of music can elicit feelings of love, happiness, sadness, loneliness, joy, anger, frustration, etc. The genre's of metal, death metal, or any other type of metal typically only elicit anger, aggression, or other darker emotions.

Nothing that I endorse or find useful.  To each his own.

I won't echo the judgmental rhetoric of my parents' generation and slander death metal, but it's not for me. Anger is a turn off.

What kind of things do you think that it promotes like bad and/or good?

I can't say for sure what it promotes, as the lyrics are mostly unintelligible to me. If it makes its target audience happy, and they buy CD's then that's good. If it just incites aggression and pisses off neighbors, then that's bad.

I've seen two question of you asking about "Genre"s promotion"

Music genres won't promote anything. It's musicians who choose how they personally want to promote about the music they representing and what subjects they want to promote with their music.

The only thing that genre represents is the environment of it's music. Which is the usage of notes, octaves and instruments.

For instance, generally when you say rock, there must be basically a drum, bass guitar and electronic guitar, it can be also a rhyme guitar as well. Now Rock has so many groups into it. When you add "electronic samples" to those instruments. The genre turns into Nu metal (it's one of the rock genre levels)

When you say death metal, the instruments are the same, but what happens into it is heavier usage of octaves. And more screamo notes. And usually the high percent of death metal culture is into countries like Finland,Denmark and Norway.

Anyway, so the point if you looking for promotions. You're in a wrong place. This is a total misconception that a genre would promote something. It never does. It's musicians itself that promote their topics that's all.

For example, let's say rock, you can find ten different rock bands that represent ten different purpose and topic with their music. It's not necessarily because they all doing rock so they all need to say the same thing no. As simple as that.

I'm not sure I listen to death metal ... But I love the song Freak on a Leash by Korn ... Cos sometimes when you're angry , angry music is an amazing outlet :) also when I was really pms'y my ex would say " don't tread on me " is my song :) that's just metal ..

But would make me laugh even though I was RAGEING :p I think all music has a purpose ...even death metal :) I don't have experience with that but it's the closest I can get .. Sooo DONT TREAD ON ME :p

It's an interesting question. Does angry music promote angry feelings? Or do angry people seek out angry music? It's a classic chicken and egg scenario.

I used to listen to a lot of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails when I was in high school, and it was definitely a "darker" period of my life, even though looking back on it, I didn't have all that much to feel angry or upset about, other than the usual teenage angst stuff.

But was it the music? Or just the teenage mood swings?

Then again, I recently went to see a band called "Evil Scarecrow", and their brand of death metal obviously didn't take itself too seriously, and I can't see how anyone could come away feeling too negative after listening to them...
