Sheesh!!!
The term "you people" morphed into a insensitive racial slur after Ross Perot used it in addressing a primarily black audience during his presidential campaign in the 1990's.
I had learned it as child to be the equivalent to "you guys"---which simply denoted some group of people to whom you were referring.
I used "you people" earlier this year when addressing two black women at work and inadvertently wound up "inciting" them slightly. (That's when I researched the phrase and found the Ross Perot issue.)
Since that was not my intent, I apologized and have since eliminated it as a practical matter when addressing racially mixed groups informally.
