There's definitely oxygen received from o2 masks on the plane. They are there incase the cabin pressure drops. Without them everyone would pass out, because of under-oxygenated blood, and die..
But you are right! There isn't actually oxygen in those masks.

I think that they do have Oxygen in them, not to block out the screams.... Okay, maybe a little... :-)
If the masks drop, it's usually due to a loss in cabin pressure, so people tend to be either going unconscious or they are pretty focused on getting that mask on.
Screaming requires being able to breath.
And as they say, "When you can't breathe, nothing else matters."

Why don't they just sit at home and let the
