A riddle. (by Stuart o'Neill) There are 125 sheep and 5 dogs in a flock. How old is the shepherd?

Well...5 goes into 125, 25 times, and 25 is 5 squared.  But squares don't have five sides, so none of that is pertinent. 

His neighbor's name is Tim, and he just celebrated his 39th birthday.  Now 3 goes into 39, 13 times and 13 is a prime number.  So that's irrelevant.

You can’t determine the answer.

I debated adding this riddle because it is less of a riddle and more of an illustration of how kids are (or are not) being taught to think for themselves. But after reading how kids feel the need to make up an answer without understanding why, I thought this could be a good reminder for all of us to exercise our critical thinking skills.

Dear HSAA,

There is not enough information for me to give you the age of the shepherd. However, if you like I can explain why things are more like they are than they ever have been before...and I can support that with three examples....?

I had fun with it HSAA...I would do things like this with my god daughter, just for fun and to give her the feeling of logic v. illogic!

Aren't the pupils of school lucky to have the internet & google etc. I can remember that when I was going to school if we had to do a project or essay we had to go down to the library and hopefully if you were in luck you would get a book and then get have to read the book to do the project. So much is changed.
