At first I thought there is no answer to this question, but I thought if we do it literally, you have 8 as the answer. You take half of 8 (either upper of lower half) and you get o which is nothing.

The number from which one can take away half and be left with nothing is the number half, which is written in the fraction form as the number ½ and in the decimal form as 0.5. This calculation can be shown with the help of the following algebraic equation.

We have to assume that the number from which one can take away half and be left with nothing is to represented algebraically using the variable x (as the variable x is used to represent an unknown number in an algebraic equation).

Therefore we have the algebraic equation x-1/2 = 0. If you multiply both the sides of the equation by the number two, we get the equation 2x-1 = 0. When you move the -1 from the left hand side of the equation to the right hand side of the equation, it changes signs and become +1 or just 1. Therefore, you are left with the new equation 2x = 0+1 or 2x = 1. Therefore, when you divide both the sides of the equation by two, you get x = ½. Therefore, the number from which one can take away half and be left with nothing is the number half.

1/2 can take away 1/2 and leave nothing. Because 1/2 - 1/2 (take away 1/2) = 0. 0 is nothing.

I don't know if this is fair, but this is how I solve it.
