The star spangled banner is the flag of the United States. It is also the national anthem of the country. A poet by the name of Francis Scott Key wrote the song on 14th September 1814.

Key was inspired by the smoke coming out from the vent of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, which had courageously endured 25 hours of British attack. In spite of the heavy smoke, Key could see the huge garrison flag fly high with pride. The image of the flag flying in all its glory in the most adverse of circumstances was firmly entrenched in the mind of Key who wrote a poem to that effect.

The poem which was composed into a song soon became popular in the Civil War and was played on many a patriotic occasion. It was adopted by the Congress in 1931 as the national anthem of the United States.
