Bessee Cooper is the oldest person on the planet. She was born in 1896, making her over 115 years old.

The oldest person in the world

Great Grandmother Besse Cooper (née Brown) was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee on August 26, 1896. She is currently the oldest person in the world, although she still has some way to go to beat the oldest person ever recorded.

Although records are often hard to come by, and it is sometimes difficult to work out someone's exact birth date, it is thought that Jeanne Calment of France was the oldest person ever to have lived. She died at the ripe age of 122 years and 164 days.

The way things currently stand, Besse Cooper is actually 10th on the list of the world's oldest people ever recorded.

Oldest man in the world

Jiroemon Kimura is the oldest man on the planet. He was born on the 19th of April 1897, and lives in Kyoto, Japan.

In 2011 he survived the Kyoto earthquake which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, and he attributes his longevity to a health-conscious and active lifestyle.

The oldest person living today is an American woman called Gertrude Baines, who celebrated her 115th birthday on 6 April this year. There may well be other people who are older than this, but the problem is having definite proof of age.

The oldest person who ever lived, as far as we know for sure is still Jeanne Calment, a Frenchwoman who lived to 126.

According to the Guinness book of world records the oldest person living in the world is a women named Marie Febronie from Quebec. She was born on August 29th 1880 and is now a 127 years old.

The second oldest living person takes the second place in the Guinness book is a woman named Sara Knauss from Philadelphia and she was born on September 24th 1880 and is only a month younger to the oldest person living.

However, there is an Elizabeth Ma Pampo from Israel who turned 128 this year. She has not been officially considered by the Guinness book as the oldest living person because Elizabeth does not a have a verified claim or a legal document of her age.
