The founding father of Macy's is Rowland Hussey Macy. He opened the first Macy's store in New York City in 1858. Since then, Macy's has grown to become one of America's premier shopping brands. Macy's moved to Harald Square in 1902, and over time became the biggest departmental store in the world. Macy's was bought over by Federated Department Stores in 1994, and has since been the premier store in the FD stable. Macy's introduced a number of innovations to store shopping. It was the first store to have its own Santa Claus inside the store, as an enticement for families to come and do their Christmas shopping. The concept was a roaring success and has been adopted by departmental stores ever since. It was also the first departmental store to introduce the concept of window displays.

Macy's has been steadily expanding its operations across the length and breadth of the United States. It has been doing this by opening new stores and acquiring already existing stores where possible. Today, there are more than 800 Macy's stores in the US.
