The idea for Home and Away came about when Alan Bateman, Network Seven’s head of drama was on a family outing. They stopped in Kangaroo Point, which is in New South Wales and got talking with some local people who were angry about the building of a children’s home in their area. Seeing the level of conflict this situation was causing gave Bateman the inspiration to develop it as a soap opera idea.
In the beginning, the soap concentrated on the Fletcher family who bought a caravan park and fostered children, who brought with them a variety of dramas and storylines.
Many of the actors and actresses who have had roles in Home and Away have used it as a stepping stone to other acting opportunites, with some of them having notable successes.
Up until 2010, all interior shots for Home and away were made at Seven Sydney’s Epping studios, but they are now shot at the Australian Technology Park in Redfern. Outdoor scenes are taped at Palm Beach primarily, but also at Fisherman’s Beach in Collaroy, which is in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney.
The Home and Away team are not afraid to tackle controversial issues such as bullying, gambling, domestic violence, child abuse, teen pregnancies, child abduction, marital problems, cancer, and drug addiction, though these serious story lines are tempered with lighter issues that bring some humour to the soap.
