This happened to my friends Guinea pig, once one died, the other became depressed and around a month later he died. Not wanting to worry you here but I would recommend getting another gerbil to keep him company and raise his spirits.

A greyhound. This is partly because they have a very poor sense of smell so I guess nature decided to give them good eyesight. This is why they use electric rabbits in races because they can't smell that it's not real they can just see it.
