Okay first of all Misty wasn't there to meet May or Dawn, she was in Cerulean City. Ash, Brock, and Misty traveled the Kanto, Johto regions together. During Johto league silver Conference (Ash loses to Harrison) after there battle Harrison tells Ash all about Hoenn. As the Conference comes to a close, and the gang prepares to to leave for Vermillion City, Gary said he quits battling, to become a pokemon researcher. When Ash, Brock, and Misty head back to Vermillion City, Misty gets a call telling her to run the gym while her sister's are on a cruise. Brock then realises that he has things to do. Ash returns home to Pallet town, getting restless for adventure, Ash decides to go to Hoenn after all. Ash leaves Pallet Town leaving every other pokemon behind besides pikachu. He goes ALONE with Pikachu.
Ash meets May in the second Hoenn episode (Get the show on the road) when pikachu is dangerously ill from team rocket. Little Root didn't have a pokemon center so Ash turned to Prof. Birch for help. But they have to catch pikachu first, who ran into the forest. Meanwhile May was heading to Prof. Birch for her first pokemon. She arrives just in time to save him from a pack of poochyena. Hint thats how may gets Torchick. After pikachu fells better, Ash is ready to head to Oldale town to sign up for the pokemon league. May offered to show Ash the way in exchange for his company to Oldale town since pikachu destroyed May's bike! (Just like Misty)
Thats how May came into the picture. May's little brother Max inters the picture when May and Ash reach Petalsburg City, When Ash first gets to the gym he meets Max who is pretending to be gym leader. After a quick battle with team rocket Ash, and May are ready to hit the road when Max decided to tag along too. Brock comes in when Ash, May and Max get act tacked by a bunch of territorial taillow. Out of no where Brock saves the day with his forretress-and his soup! Brock is ready to travel again and has joined up with the group. In the end the group spilt ways after may's and ash's contest. That night during dinner (after contest) May tells them that she plans on going to Johto to compete in pokemon contests, without Max. The next day May, and Max board a ship to Hoenn, and Ash and Brock also separate, with Ash rushing home to eat. After seeing nones home Ash goes to Prof. Oak's lab , he challenges Gary to a battle and loses. Gary heads back to Sinnoh, Ash wants to go there to so he leaves the next morning.
