Before the late 1920s, when no dialogue was heard in, or accompanied the films, we had the silent era. With just moving pictures, the films of that time spoke to their audience in a different, almost magical way. Sometimes referred to as 'The Age of the Silver Screen' the success of the silent era can be largely attributed to the actors and actresses of the time. Some of the biggest silent movie stars include funny man Charlie Chaplin, leading screen cowboy Tom Mix, 'Laurel and Hardy' comedians Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Harold Lloyd, Roscoe Arbuckle and Rudolph Valentino. Of course one cannot mention the greats of the silent era without making a mention of Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Clara Bow, Lillian Gish and Mary Pickford. However, in April of 1923, in the United States, the very first film with synchronized sound was introduced and the world welcomed the 'talkies'.
Colleen moore was at one time the number one box-office draw.
