The Dukes of Hazzard was a popular 1970s American television series featuring two young Southern 'good old boys' with a fast car, complete with painted-on confederate flag, who liked to play fast-and-loose with the law while running moonshine around a small Dixie town, run by corrupt politician Boss Hogg and his cackling henchman, Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane.
It was a spin-off of the 1975 film Moonrunners whose plot centred on an old-school small-scale moonshining operation (run by Uncle Jesse ~ who also appeared in the television series) which finds itself in conflict with the big-city mafia. As in the Dukes of Hazzard, car chase scenes dominated the action. Most of the main characters from the television series were taken directly from the film, though the names were often changed.
Both the film and television series were based on the real-life adventures of moonshiner and race-car driver Jerry Rushing
