The girl who Roman Polanski was accused of raping (although he was actually convicted under the lesser charge of unlawful sexual intercourse) is Samatha Gailey (now using the last name Geimer).

The incident took place in March 1977, when Polanski was 43 and Samantha was just 13.

Roman Polanski sex scandal

The incident in question actually occurred over two separate occasions, where Samantha was invited by Polanski to pose for photos that he claimed would appear in an edition of French Vogue that he was guest-editing.

During the photo-shoots, Polanski plied the girl with Champagne and other substances, and performed several sex acts on her.

The original grand jury charge sheet that Polanski faced included the following:

  • Rape by use of drugs
  • Perversion
  • Sodomy
  • Lewd and lascivious act upon a child under fourteen
  • Furnishing a controlled substance to a minor,
Following legal wrangling between Polanski's lawyers and state prosecutors, he agreed to a plea-bargain where he would be charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. In return, all other charges were dropped.

Polanski Sexual abuse case

The case was obviously the subject of intense media scrutiny at the time, but also made headlines for different reasons over the next few decades. Polanski was originally asked to submit to psychiatric evaluation, and was expected to receive a probation sentence.

When it became obvious that the judge had a custodial sentence in mind, Polanski decided to flee to France. He then spent several years avoiding countries that were likely to extradite him back to the US by working between France, Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland.

Other noteworthy dates regarding the sex scandal include:

  • 1988, Samantha Geimer brough a civil cased against Polanski and successfully sued the director.
  • 2009, Polanski travelled to Switzerland to receive a lifetime achievement award and was arrested.

Roman Polanski is an actor and director of Polish films. He has also won an Academy award for the same. He has also directed many films in Hollywood, his most famous works being 'Rosemary's Baby', 'The Pianist' and 'Oliver Twist'.

Roman's personal life has been through a lot - he was also accused of having sex with a minor 13-year-old 'Samantha Geimer'. At that time Roman's age was 43.

It is said that Roman had told the girl's mother that he would like to do a photo shoot of 'Samantha' for the cover of the French magazine called 'Vogue'.

Polanski was charged with rape. He pleaded his innocence by stating the girl's mother had fixed him up, and tried blackmailing him.

He was however not released and was found guilty. After the verdict Roman decided to flee from the United States to Paris.
