- What is a lyre?
A classical lyre is a musical instrument that is stringed. Played with a plectrum in much the same way that one would play a zither or a guitar, you do not pluck a lyre as you would a harp to hear its tune, despite their similar.
According to Greek tradition, a lyre should be constructed using the shell of a turtle. However, they are now made purely from wood, consisting of two curved arms, connected together by a crossbar and attached to the hollowed out body, which is known as a resonator, or sound box. Attached to this box is yet another crossbar, and it is this that conveys the vibrations that the strings give out when touched.
Ancient Greek mythology states that the strings of the instrument where originally created from the intestines of one of Appolo's cows, when Hermes decided to brutally kill it in order to hear the sweet music that it could forever give to the world. Appolo was furious when he discovered what had happened to one of the members of his sacred herd, but forgave the young god when he was given the lyre as a gift.
