Silent films used to be the norm in the golden days of Old Hollywood; however, once sound came to the cinema, it opened up a whole new world of entertainment to people all over the world. Howard Hughes, the business magnate and film director, produced one of the first films with full sound. Eventually, silent films died away, and, in time, films with sound were also combined with exciting "Technicolor" visuals, such as the bright, beautiful effects found in "The Wizard of Oz".

  • Television created a global village

In the fifties, television was invented, and shows, such as "The Ed Sullivan Show", showcased up and coming musical acts, such as Elvis and the Beatles. News programs also allowed people to learn more about other cultures and political systems - in a sense, as television sets became more common in typical households, TV spurred a whole new "global village" where people felt more connected to others...even those who lived thousands of miles away.

  • Internet also changed the world

When the Internet was invented, the whole "global village" concept took on a whole new meaning. Information could now be shared instantly and news could travel at warp speed to locations all over the world. The Internet is currently impacting politics in a serious way, as revolutions in the Middle East feature gathering of people who used social networking to plan out protests.

  • Books and magazines are going digital

Today, books and magazines are still popular, but the landscape is changing rapidly. More and more people are using e-readers to upload digital copies of magazines and books. E-readers, such as the Kindle and the Nook, are changing the way people enjoy and absorb information.

A future without paper copies of books and magazines is actually possible now, where it seemed inconceivable mere decades ago. Chances are, magazines will be the first to go, as many print magazines have already switched to an exclusively digital format.
