  • The Simpsons
A popular cartoon parodying the exploits of a stereotypical American family.
The Simpsons has been running since 1987 to the present day, the show features the working class Simpson family, consisting of the primary characters, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie.

Set in the town of Springfield, the television series follows the interactions between the unfortunate Simpson family and their community of misfits. These include Mr Burns, a nuclear power plant owner, bar landlord Moe and Principal Skinner.

Now the longest-running American sitcom, The Simpsons has been airing for 486 episodes across 22 seasons, and was released as a feature length film in 2005.

Famous for its traditional 2D animation, Simpsons creator Matt Groening, has been critical of the use of Computer Generated imagery (CGI), stating that the shows animation was "deliberately imperfect" as a "tribute to the art of (traditional) hand-drawn animation".

  • Family Guy
Similarly, 'Family Guy', from creator Seth Macfarlane, is a satirical cartoon following the dysfunctional Griffin family, who are Peter, Lois, Meg, Chris, baby Stewie, and their talking dog Brian.

Like The Simpsons, Family Guy follows the Griffin family through their everyday lives in the fictional town of Quahog.

More adult in nature and often featuring surreal comedy, the show has been running for 165 episodes across nine seasons, and has had a number of straight to DVD films.

As with the Simpsons, Family guy relies on 2D animation, however creator MacFarlane is to make his directorial debut in the CGI animated film Ted.
