Yes, I agree, a downloaded movie is usually avi format, and when you download a video from YouTube, the format is usually flv. To burn the movie or video to DVD, here is nice DVD burner software you could use to burn DVD with fast speed and high output quality.

If you have downloaded movie from internet it will most probably be in avi format you need a converter programe to convert from avi to mpeg and make sure that your dvd player supports dvd+r and dvd-r, is the best site

To burn a movie to a dvd in order to play back on a stand alone dvd player, the files must be either an image file like .ISO,.img or .MDF/.MDS or in a VIDEO_TS folder.

If it is in one of the above mentioned formats,(avi, mpg, mpeg, wmv, mp4) you will have to convert them
to an .ISO or a VIDEO_TS folder.
You can do that with convertxtodvd.

To burn your .img,.ISO or VIDEO_TS folder, you can use DVDFab platinum.
To burn an .MDS/.MDF file, you need a virtual optical drive program, like deamon tools or alcohol120%

It depends on what dvd burner you use to burn dvd. My burning software can support many popular video formats including avi, mpg, mpeg, wmv, mp4 and so on.  I use it to burn dvd and it works well for me, never such problem has happened.

Change a DVD burning tool, there is no need to have specific formats to burn to DVD. Most of the DVD creator tool support lots of different formats, from avi, mp4 to some HD movie m2ts,mkv etc.
