Sounds like your grandfather is very talented, but there are literally thousands of musical instruments as each culture has many unique instruments. There are several categories of instruments including:

Cordophones - instruments whose sound is produced by the vibration of strings

Idiophones - percussion instruments whose vibrating material is an elastic substance, such as metal or wood.

Membranophones - percussion instruments whose vibrating material is a membrane, such as the tympani

Aerophones - wind instruments and the vocal cords

Electrophones - instruments which synthesize their sounds electronically.

And under each of these classes are thousands of instruments. I don't doubt that he can play instruments from all these classes, but to say he plays every instrument there is, would be an exaggeration. I know several music majors and they play numerous instruments from all classes, but as talented as they are I know its impossible to play every instrument there is in the world.

I would just have to say "WOW" to that. Because I have never known a person in my entire life who can play all the instruments. It is simply amazing and extraordinary.

Your grandfather must be a unique person. This is because a person needs to synchronize all his senses in order to play an instrument and thus its often difficult to learn more than one instrument.

My brother used to play flute as well as Guitar and we found him out of this world for that reason. And here is your grand dad who can play every single instrument which is totally awesome. Your grand father must come in one of those shows on TV, that present unique people.

I could play every string instrument and now I want to start playing woodwinds next. I love playing them because it takes my minds off of worrying , troubles , emotional problems and I get into my music seriously!

My brother Mark Anthony was 4yrs old when he picked up a guitar, from there he played every instrument known,he was never taught and he never read a single note but he could make those musical instruments sound as if they were the ones singing,I have not heard any one else could do it until you mentioned your grandfather, that is truly a God given gift.

Not many musicians know to to play every instrument, but there are a handful who knows how to play a lot to almost all instruments. My music teacher knew how to play ever instrument she had her hands on, and she played each of them beautifully!

Hi , I started messing around on  piano when I was 4 , refused lessons as I thought it would turn me off music forever.  Took up drums when I was 13 and took lessons every week. Also learned how to play guitar , as well as most people.

I was accepted into a Jazz Performance Degree on piano a few years ago. During the first year I took trumpet as a second instrument ( grade 5 at the moment) . I was told that trumpet and trombone were not worlds apart , so 1 year after taking up trumpet I got a trombone and have been teaching myself since.

At this present day I am also learning Tenor Sax + Clarinet ( not too different to each other ) , Flute and Viola. I am getting lessons on the viola  ,  for correct bowing technique etc.
I reckon one more , Cello , and I will be very content with the variety on sounds I can produce.

I am 24yrs old and am looking forward to a career in composing for film , media etc.
The reasoning behind learning all these instruments was that I didnt want to be making lots of phone calls , trying to track down players of various instruments every time I had an idea for a composition.

I have sacrificed a lot of time learning these instruments but I consider it worth while for my own personal uses. I would not recommend it as it does take a lot of time and energy.
I would say this though : The Process of learning becomes a lot easier with each new instrument taken up. You begin to understand that the language (music) is all the same , just the technique used to produce a sound that varies.

Shane.
