It isn't Mexican, its origin is in North America. British and worldwide audiences dubbed it the Mexican Wave after the Football World Cup in 1986 where native fans indulged in the Wave to show their support of the home side.

American baseball (citing games in 1981), American collegiate football (citing a game in 1981), and Canadian hockey (citing a game in 1980) claim to have had the first professional games where the wave swept through the crowd. Obviously the Canadian game happened first, but the other fans claim that theirs was an equally spontaneous gesture.

The Canadians claim is that one of their regular game entertainers (a professional cheerleader named Krazy George) had a routine where he would get the fans riled up by taking turns standing up on opposite sides of the Colliseum. Once there was a delay in fans responding, leading to a ripple effect through the crowd. Krazy George liked the effect so cultivated it in an organised fashion at subsequent games. The wave developed at other games in a similar manner. It seems like after a while the fans realised they didn't need a leader just to have this fun for themselves.
