(5*6+3)/5

= 33/5 * 1/6

= 11/10 or 1 and 1/10 finished
======so,

2*33/2*5 = 66/10 - 11/10

= 55/10

55/10 =  5 and 1/2 miles left to complete ------

Sometimes the numbers work out so you can do the problem without converting to/from improper fractions. 1/6 of the project is complete, so 1 - 1/6 = 5/6 of the project remains to be completed.
(5/6)*(6 3/5) = (5/6)*(6) + (5/6)*(3/5) = 5 + 3/6 = 5 1/2
5 1/2 miles of freeway must be built to complete the new section.
