One very famous thing that goes up and down then sideways in Willy Wonka's glass elevator in the book by Roald Dahl 'Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.' In the film of the book, audiences loved the scene when Charlie and his bewildered Grandfather were invited by Willy Wonka to ride in the fabulous up and down, sideways and slantways elevator:

Willy Wonka: This is the great glass Wonkavator.

Grandpa Joe: It's an elevator.

Willy Wonka: No, it's a Wonkavator. An elevator can only go up and down, but the Wonkavator can go sideways, and slantways, and longways, and backways...

The sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. Arguably, the plot of  this book is even more psychedelic than that of the first. The beginning of the story picks up where the first book finishes. Charlie, his grandfather and Willie Wonka are still inside the fateful elevator but it has left the confines of the Chocolate Factory all together and taken to the skies. Incredible adventures ensue.
