Unusual. A chick flick that even men can enjoy. Somebody got it just right.

Visually, it was great and funny and interesting

But intellectually, it troubled me.  This is the story of Cinderella, and all the other stories where a downtrodden, poverty strike girl is rescued by a handsome, rich guy who is non-violent and thoughtful.  Lots of girls and romantic girls get the idea that this actually happens if they look good enough, have a thigh gap, and have big boobs.

Movies like this give naive girls the notion that if they wait, he will come.  I don't know how they can show a struggle to become educated and accomplished and equal.  I'll stop there.

I take your point, of course, but I rarely expect Hollywood to make reasoned philosophical or social points. It does happen, of course, but mostly they're just entertainment. It was enjoyed at Chez Didge.

I liked it when I was younger because the comedy played on the stark contrast between the snobby elite and the downtrodden, also being a rescue romance. It is unrealistic, but the whole point of most films is to escape reality for a while. The uncut version on DVD is very different to the one put on TV, it goes further into the details of her prostitution ie when she gets checked for STD's etc. I mean when you think about it do you want your 15 year old watching something that glamourises prostitution? Although didn't "skinny Marie" get pulled out of a dumpster? So not that glamorous for some unless you meet a millionaire when turning tricks.  She only considers going back to school after meeting Gere. She'd still be standing on the sidewalk instead of kneeling in front of Gere, if they hadn't of met, the message it sends isn't really a good one :/

Still I remember singing along to Grease when I was younger, it wasn't until I was older I realised it was full of sex. Sandy also gave up herself to be an old slapper for Danny, kind of the reverse of Pretty Woman.

I enjoyed it.

Various themes---Pygmalion, Hooker with heart of gold, etc.---but I just enjoyed the movie because I liked a number of things about it:

(I'll use actors' names because I don't remember the characters.)

Gere and Roberts are not really what they do---basically good people for whom things worked out well.

Hector Elizondo, the hotel manager who precisely meets Roberts' needs.

Ralph Bellamy gets what he wants.

Gere's lawyer gets what he deserves, but is not destroyed.

Enjoyable, satisfying, "win-win" outcome---not a typical movie theme.
