His deep blue eyes earned him the nickname "Ol' Blue Eyes".  He had a brief retirement.  Then in 1973 he had a highly advertised and successful comeback television special and an album entitled "Ol' Blue Eyes is Back."  That album title solidified the nickname.

He visited Australia about 19801980 and, in his usual charming manner, called our female journalists a bunch of hookers. So the AJA put a black ban on him and the other unions picked it up and, for a while, he couldn't get out of the country. The London times carried the story under the headline, "Old Blue Eyes is Black".
