I want to watch fast and furious 7, do I need to watch the other movies in the series to do this?

The connection between the characters, their stories, are built throughout the other movies. The 7th, from my understanding, runs off of Tokyo Drift. I imagine you could watch it separately, but you'd be missing a great story! I have yet to see the 7th, but I've seen the others. One of the best series ever!

It's up to you, but i would watch all the movies from the first because i would understand what is happening and how the story going and how the characters and the main story built up.
