What do you mean by "real" ? There's always music that has always been a mix of music that has meaning and those that don't make any sense.

Just because they aren't a particular genre, doesn't mean they aren't meaningful songs.

Real songwriters? Are they like true Christians and true Scotsmen? They're in the mind of the beholder, Zack.

He had so many (I particularly liked his abyss comment). I guess you're talking about the correct way not existing.

I know he's referred to frequently by a number of atheists.

I don't remember if you have said how you came to atheism, but generally speaking a belief in anything (including a specific god) always includes the possibility that such a god might not actually exist.

So in a sense, I have lived with the possibility that there is no god, and that's a long time to find it have the opinion that atheism isn't a tenable "anything" for me.

I was fed religion from the cradle, very enthusiastic during my teens and early 20s, but I had minimal formal education (left school at 15) and as I started to read more widely, and to discuss my religion with non-believers, I realised it had absolutely no substance. The whole thing seemed built on fantasy. An interesting fantasy, perhaps, but not one that was tenable.

Then I met Omar Khayyam and I doubt that any formal religion could stand up against his gentle reason.

Omar was very spiritual as well, of course, and there's certainly a spiritual side to me -- but it has nothing to do with religion.

Your generation gap might be showing.

Mine always does.

I can remember my grandmother saying

the music I listened to was just noise.

Just remember the music you hate today,

you can hear in the grocery store tomarrow.
