Seal's Scars: Discoid Lupis Erythematosus
As a child Seal suffered from the skin disease, discoid lupus erythematosus, which causes inflammation, scarring and hair loss.
The disease left him with the half-moon scars which can still be seen under his eyes.
Various rumors used to circulate about these, including a story that they were a form of "tribal scarring", but in fact they are solely the result of this illness.
Seal's scars embarrassed and upset him when he was young, but he grew to appreciate them as giving him a distinctive look, or even a trademark. He once remarked: "If I could design something, I don't think I could do it better.
A Brief History of Seal
In the early 1980s, Seal completed a degree in architecture, and - after various temporary jobs - he joined a band called Push.
He then traveled to a number of countries, including India, where he feels that he learned to take a more peaceful and accepting attitude towards life, his career and many other things - including his childhood scars.
Seal began to achieve fame in 1990 when, with fellow UK artist Adamski, he co-wrote and recorded the song "Killer".

This reached Number 1 in the charts, and was followed by other successes including "Crazy" (although this was actually recorded earlier than "Killer".)
Seal went on to produce a number of other hits (one of these was "Kiss From a Rose", which is known to millions from the film "Batman Forever") and he also won several awards.
In the 1990s, however, Seal went through a troubled period, apparently finding it difficult to adjust to the pressures of fame.

He was also involved in a serious car crash and caught double pneumonia soon afterwards.
Luckily, though, he recovered and continued with his career, and his album "Soul", was released in November 2008.
In 2005, Seal had married model Heidi Klum. They have two children, Henry and Johann, as well as Heidi's daughter Helene, from a previous marriage.
