You can also watch previews of the next episode and read all sorts of news and interviews about the show. There have now been 9,620 episodes of The Young And The Restless. It was created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell for CBS back in 1973.
The show is set in a fictional Wisconsin town called Genoa City. It was originally broadcast as half-hour episodes, five times a week but expanded to one-hour episodes in 1980. The idea of the show was to compete with the ABC soap operas; All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital. CBS wanted something that would compete for the attention of young viewers.
It has been a great success in achieving this goal as by last year it had managed over 1,000 consecutive weeks in the number one spot for daytime dramas in the USA. When it was first aired in 1973 it was at the bottom of those ratings but its popularity grew fast. It was ninth by 1975, third by 1976 and by 1989 it had overtaken General Hospital.
The running story lines were originally focused on two families, Brooks and Easter, but more characters and more complex relationships between them have developed over the years.
William Bell worked as head writer on the show until his retirement in 1998 and since then a number of people have held the position including Kay Alden, Trent Jones, John F. Smith, Lynn Marie Latham, Scott Hamner, Josh Griffith, Maria Arena Bell, and Hogan Sheffer. The Young And The Restless is one of the most popular shows on television in the USA and has won seven Daytime Emmy Awards.
