Working out which film made the most money ever is actually not as straight-forward as it may seem.

Which ever way you look at it though, there are only two films that can be associated with the title of most financially successful film ever: Avatar and Gone With The Wind

The movie that made the most money in history

The biggest problem with working out which movie made the most money overall is inflation. The price of a cinema ticket has changed significantly between the release of Gone With The Wind 1939 and Avatar in 2009.

Because of this, simply counting how much money the two movies took at the box office isn't an accurate measurement because a dollar was worth significantly more in 1939 than it was in 2009.
If we take into account the factor of inflation, Avatar raked in around $2,782,300,000, whilst Gone With The Wind would have taken $3,301,400,000 in today's money- making it the overall winner.

The second problem with working out how much a movie takes is that movies don't just stop making money.
Although they are often measured by how much money they take at the box office during their run in theaters, movies can go on making even more money through the following:

  • DVD release
  • TV Broadcasting
  • Merchandise

Top ten most successful movies If we again adjust the figures to reflect changes in inflation, then the Top 10 most successful movies ever made would like something like this:

  1. Gone With The Wind
  2. Avatar
  3. Star Wars
  4. Titanic
  5. The Sound of Music
  6. E.T.
  7. The Ten Commandments
  8. Doctor Zhivago
  9. Jaws
  10. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

This is not as simple as it seems to answer. As of February 2007, the answer is Cameron's and 20th Century/Paramount's Titanic made the most money, finally (and still) raking in $1,845,034,188.

The third volume of the J.R.R Tolkien trilogy Lord of the Rings, the Return of the King is the second highest with an impressive $1,118,888,979.

However, adjusted for inflation Gone with the Wind is the highest-earning movie of all time with over two point six billion dollars. The second highest is the original Star Wars movie with two point five billion. (Remember these are adjusted for inflation).

The highest earning British movie of all time was The Full Monty, taking over eighty seven million dollars.

The most expensive movie of all time to produce is Avatar, another James Cameron film set in space - its current cost is set at two hundred million dollars.

As of December 2010, Avatar (2009) has the highest domestic ($760,507,625) and worldwide ($2,779,551,867) box office gross receipts.

However, when adjusted for inflation, Gone with the Wind (1939) has the highest domestic gross box office receipts at $1,606,254,800, followed by Star Wars (1977) with $1,416,050,800, and The Sound of Music (1965) at $1,132,202,200...

I do not think they should count by $$$$$ made.  They count by tickets sold.   Evens out for prices going up over time.

Avatar just beat Titanic. It's funny Titanic and Avatar have made the most money, and they're both by the same director.
